Clearwater

Clearwater is located in the northern half of Florida's Pinellas Peninsula. It is surrounded
by a spectacular natural landscape. Almost continuous sunshine, excellent beaches, a
variety of recreational activities and excellent restaurants make Clearwater a very popular
and worthwhile destination.

The name comes from the fresh water springs that were found on the spot where
Clearwater stands today. Pioneers started settling in the area around the 1800s, and by
1880, the Orange Bluff - Clearwater's first hotel - was built, marking the first sign of the
tourism industry to come. By the1920s, Clearwater had become a very important
destination for tourists who came mainly from north of the country. People were drawn -
much as they are today - to the Gulf beaches with their powder white sand, warm water
and gentle waves that make for perfect swimming conditions.

The Clearwater Marina has the largest sport fishing fleet on the West Coast of Florida. It
is one of the liveliest early morning spots in the city as charter boats take off for the deep
gulf fishing banks. There are also cruises that will take you out into the Gulf of Mexico to
see dolphins or you can take a night cruise and enjoy dancing and casinos on board as
you take in the view of the city lights from out at sea.

While in the area it's worth visiting The Clearwater Marine Aquarium. It's an active
facility committed to marine research, animal rescue and educating the public on the
caring and preservation of marine life. People are given the chance to get 'up close and
personal' with many of the Aquarium's inhabitants as there are a number of hands on
exhibits whereby visitors get to touch the animals.

After an active day of sightseeing, it's a good idea to take a stroll down to Pier 60 at the
north end of Clearwater Beach. It's the perfect place for sitting down to relax and watch
the sun go down into the Gulf of Mexico. For a few hours every evening, bands provide
live music and buskers line out along the pier.
